An Amtrak train with approximately 240 passengers crashed into a dump truck in Mendon, Missouri yesterday (June 27th, 2022). The collision caused the train to derail and resulted in at least three deaths and dozens of serious injuries.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is conducting an investigation into the collision. At this early stage, it is believed that the dump truck attempted to cross the tracks at an “uncontrolled” railroad crossing, which means there are no warning lights, gates, or fences. The crossing point did have a stop sign, though, according to reports.

An early report from local Missouri State Highway Patrol officers states that two fatalities were suffered by people on the train and the other was suffered by someone in the dump truck. It is not known if the onboard fatalities were suffered by train staff members or passengers. An inconclusive number of people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, but it has been reported to be in the dozens.

As the FRA investigation continues, potential liability for the train accident could come into better focus. Furthermore, injured Amtrak workers could be owed compensation through the Federal Employers’ Liability Act (FELA), regardless of how the crash and derailment occurred.
